When Aaron Schafer joined Family Heritage Life Insurance Company of America (FHL) in 2015, it was for a very personal reason. “I was an FHL customer before I was ever an Agent and needed to use our coverage when my daughter Sophie was born with a rare form of cancer. The experience was extremely impactful on our lives. I also loved this was a career where my ability to build an organization was 100 percent up to me. Finally, I loved the FHL culture of growth and optimism.”
Aaron’s personal experience with Family Heritage Life made him acutely aware of the importance of FHL products in his community. ”My wife and I would still be digging out of massive credit card debt if we had not taken out the cancer policy. It was such a blessing. My daughter’s case was caught early and was fairly minor as far as cancer is concerned. For families with a more prolonged battle, our products literally keep them in their home, help them avoid bankruptcy, and can be the difference between life and death for those able to get treatment they would otherwise not be able to get.”
A 2004 graduate of Michigan State University, Aaron earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Mathematics. Before joining Family Heritage Life, he was a district sales manager for Southwestern Advantage, an educational consultant in Nashville. It didn’t take long to realize his move to FHL was the right one. “I wrote an Eagle in each of my first two full weeks selling in the field, was promoted to National Sales Director after only 15 months with Family Heritage Life, and personally recruited 15 new Agents in my first 15 months with the Company. I love being able to help other Agents find a calling and not just a job. It is a beautiful thing to be able to help other people hit their goals in life.”
Aaron has some advice for anyone considering a sales or leadership position with Family Heritage Life. “Go all in,” he says. “If you are looking to simply punch a time clock, this is not the career for you. If you want to build a business and be an entrepreneur, there is nowhere better. If I could start over with the Company, I would do 30 minutes a day sales training throughout the entire year, instead of stopping upon reaching a certain level of success. There was about six months where I plateaued and continually being a student of the game makes all the difference.”
Free time for Aaron means time with his wife and children playing board games, being outdoors, doing crafts, reading together, and swimming. He also enjoys reading personal development books and novels, playing and coaching basketball, and ballroom dancing. “I run the men's basketball league through my church.” says Aaron, “and am in a pastoral role for the youth basketball league. My wife and I also teach first grade Sunday school, support several overseas missionaries and children through Compassion International, a child-advocacy ministry. In addition, we raise money for Relay for Life and do a lot of charity work, such as bringing clean water to some of the most impoverished regions of the world.”
Aaron strongly believes in the opportunities and impact his Agency provides. “At Foundation Business Group, we work hard every day to become a household name throughout our region. Our group believes everyone should have the chance to hear about FHL products that can keep their family afloat during one of the hardest times in their life, but also give them back premium if they never need to use the product. It’s a simple decision, and our role is to get it in front of as many people as possible! During the next 30 years, we look forward to having a massive impact on many families, while helping as many Agents as possible live the lives they want to live and build careers about which they’re passionate. We want to not only benefit our communities through the products we sell but also through giving back to multiple non-profit organizations, being connectors within the community, and being a positive example of how business should be done.”
